My Mother is a Kikay

Before Mother's Month ends, let me share to you how my mother and I had a Kikay time - only that it was her who was the Kikay and I gave her the time to enjoy it.

Mama and I went mall hopping, window shopping, and a lunch date one Saturday of May. I was supposed to visit the derma but decided not to later on. Instead - since mama wanted to have her nails cleaned and colored - we went to Ystilo Salon at Limketkai Center.

I accompanied her for a hand spa with manicure and a hair cut. Looked like she did enjoy the treat.

That's my Mama.

"No language can express the power, and beauty, and heroism, and majesty of a mother's love.  It shrinks not where man cowers, and grows stronger where man faints, and over wastes of worldly fortunes sends the radiance of its quenchless fidelity like a star.  ~Edwin Hubbell Chapin"

We Love You Ma!
'Coz you're amazing...just the way you are.

Remembering Lola

Yesterday, our family celebrated the 92nd birthday of our beloved Lola Sylvia (Lola Bebing as we - her grandchildren call her) at Balingasag. It was the first birthday where we celebrated without her. She passed away last year.

Lola on her 90th birthday

I went inside her room to relax a bit before traveling back home with my mother and brother. I saw her stuff toys and doll collection on the hanging cabinets - gifts given by friends, sons and daughters, and grandchildren, her photo albums with family pictures from decades ago up to the present, and photo frames of her children and grandchildren - I saw the little me on that picture frame. Those things reflected the things my lola valued the most - her family and friends.

I've had great memories with Lola:

- A great story teller. I always get hooked when it was time for her to tell stories. My favorite was that of a prince who's love for a maiden was tested against all odds (thanks to my poor memory, I can no longer recall the title of that story).

- A thoughtful grandma. She never failed to give us presents on birthdays and on Christmas. She would even secretly put bills or coins on our pockets (when the elders were not looking) every time we visit her. She would cook meals and prepare snacks for us when we were around. She always treated us like her little princes and princesses - even when we were already grown ups.

- A proud lola. She would always mention to her kumares the achievements of her grandchildren.

- A secret keeper. I share my crushes with her. I show her the pictures and she would always say I had good taste!

I simply miss her.

I miss you Lola. We all do.
Thank you for the genuine love you exuded to all of us.

No Ordinary Valentines Day

Early morning on valentines day (while on the bus heading for work):

JMR - open na ang admin offices in-ani nga oras?
ME - depende kung sayo ang service master or kung nana tao sa offices
JMR - sayo musulod imo boss?
ME - usahay...usually mga 7:30am to 7:45am
JMR - open na ang HR? OPD?
ME - hmmmm.. why man? ang clinic open 24 hours
JMR - aw wala lang..sige unya na lang
ME - aw okay

Jiemar acted strange early that morning. And I smelled something fishy.

Valentines Day was just another ordinary day for both of us - not until this year's celebration. We never celebrated valentines for some reasons. So I never expected he'd do something extraordinary this year.

After a few hours, he called:

JMR - hello, naa olis dinha? (he was looking for his supervisor)
ME - wala man..murag naa sa training center
JMR - aw okay..sige2

And so, after a few minutes, I heard his whistle and there he was outside my office with a bouquet in hand. Hey there, big smile on my face! I was turning red (my nose was turning red, he pointed out). I was surprised (and he was surprised with himself too!)  That was my first valentine bouquet ever. And the gift tag-which I never got a chance to take a picture of before I lost it: "You complete my life" Awwww. Sweet.

the evidence!

the bouquet (a dozen of red roses)!

We met at Limketkai Center - on my hand was the bouquet. I had the most evident bouquet (a big one) and we were strolling on the mall. Imagine that. Haba ng hair!

So we landed at Pancake House. All other restaurants were block busters-eavy traffic of customers here and there.

The Love Birds (cheesy!)

waiting for our order

Attack!

For Jiemar: Sweet and Sour Fish

For Me: Spicy Chicken Fillet with Brown Rice Pilaf

Happy!

And for dessert, Strawberry Sundae for me and Coffee Crumble for him at Jollibee-XU. And, pork barbecue at Barbecue Station -  Second round? Food trip Galore.

It was a No Ordinary Valentines Day.
Unforgettable.

Hooray for Valentines!
